Week 39: What I Need, Read & Ate

Todays Read:

  • Scent Guide

  • A new boutique hotel in Paris

  • Fall Lunches in NYC

Two Sides of the Coin

In the transition of mailing lists and a spike in paid subscribers we’ve got a few new faces this week.

On the other side of things last night, I ran into an old coworker at Corner Bistro who reads Outpost religiously.

For those of you who are new, welcome. For those who’ve been here since the beginning and lay compliments at dive bars in the West Village, thank you. Your support means a lot.

Need: Scent Guide

This is less about what I need and more about what you do. I’ve spent the money, thrown away the Old Spice, and done away with Target candles that make my air purifier hiss…I’m good.

But if you haven’t re-evaluated your medicine cabinet, you Need to re-evaluate your scents.
Men: If you’re reading, get to it.
Ladies: If you’re reading, forward this to your significant other.

The entire collection is available on Outpostnyc.co the websites official launch is mid November but seems only fair you all get a sneak peak.

Deodorant - Salt & Stone

I’ve used Old Spice Swagger since puberty, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the aluminum and god-knows-what else took years off my life.
Enter Salt & Stone a friend bought it for me at J.Crew when I mentioned I wanted to switch things up. The smell is incredible, and it’s made from simple ingredients that won’t kill you.

Cologne - Le Labo Noir 29

I’ve always been intimidated by cologne.
One, it’s expensive. Two, you’re committing to a scent.
But it’s a jump I finally made and I encourage everyone to do the same.

Go to Le Labo or Jo Malone, get a starter kit, and see what works. I wear Noir 29 it’s life-changing.

Home Scent

Your home should have a scent.

Incense: Incausa Palo Santo Briquettes
If you’ve ever been to any of the Save Khaki United stores in the West Village or SoHo (great menswear), you may recall a strong, particularly masculine smell.
It’s a Brooklyn-based incense brand called Incausa. I light a small piece of their Palo Santo Briquettes every week or so.

Candles

It’s tempting to buy cheap candles, don’t. They smell terrible, don’t last long, and apparently they’re not good for you. (That last point I take with a grain of salt — it’s the same crowd that says “seed oils are bad for you” and then proceeds to shove coca leaves fermented in gasoline up their noses on Saturday nights.)

Mid-Tier: Malin + Goetz Otto — this is what I have in my apartment. It’s light, and lovely. Planning on keeping one of these in the house at all times.

High-End: Trudon Gabriel (Chimney Fire) — I’ve always reached for Diptyque and love giving them as gifts (pro tip: rack up points and treat yourself). But my new favorite is Trudon’s Chimney Fire.

Diffusers - Dr. Vranjes Firenze

one, look great in homes; two, add sophistication to any room.
A friend suggested Dr. Vranjes Firenze (Florence-based) — it’s fantastic.

The French literally teach scent appreciation in elementary school. They see the importance of it, as do I.

The smell of a candle after a long day, or a nice cologne on someone you love, is lovely particularly as we approach a New York winter, which can be grim and gray.
Add a bit of scent into your life. It’s been a welcomed change in mine.

Read - New Hotel in Paris

I read about a new hotel in Paris that looks incredible.
I hope to bring you more hotel recommendations soon with my new friends over at Staays — but in the meantime, check this one out.

Hotel Masse - 9th Arridisomant

Ate: Natoora Lunch Recap

The Natoora Lunch I attended was one of the coolest meals I’ve been to in a long time

Hosted at a warehouse in Bushwick the Citi Bike ride over was an adventure, but the dishes from Jay Wolman and the King team were unreal.

This Beef cheek wrapped in cabbage with a pumpkin puree and a bit of broth was so lovely.

The bad news: the event has come and gone.
The good news: you can catch Jay Wolman, who hosts pop-ups regularly with Intermission.

and the King team every Sunday, making one of my favorite dishes in New York. I have it on good authority that the Cassoulet is returning for fall brunch.

For those able to celebrate have a great long weekend.
