When I give wardrobe advice, or work on my own, I try to stick to one mantra: build out the staples first. Don’t go too far in one direction or the other. Get the pants, shoes and shirts down before you go anywhere else. You can find the start of that encyclopedia in our Shoe Guide and Pants Guide.
This is not that list. Fall is for the statement pieces: the chore coat the temperature is only right for once a year, the collegiate knit that’s really out there, the rugby with embroidery fit for a 1400s king with a tapestry addiction. Sure, there are some staples and maybe even a few repeats. But by and large, these are pieces you simply don’t need. But man, do they look good.
SHIRTS & RUGBYS
Ayr The Everyday in Cool Wool - I don’t know what it is about Ayr. Their menswear feels almost Parisian for a New York company. There’s a European ease to it that I love, and it’s all over this fall guide.
Kempt Mid Blue Stripe Oxford - Another brand you could build an entire wardrobe from. Based out of Ireland, of all places, the team at Kempt is only going to get bigger.
J. Mueser Washed Black Denim Pearl Snap - If you know menswear, you know (or should know) Jake. His latest appearance on Throwing Fits will only cement his already well-established position as one of the best tailors in the world. What you may not know is that the ready-to-wear is also incredible.
Rowing Blazers Primary Striped Rugby - Generally, I think Rowing Blazers has been in a bit of a lull since Jack sold it. I’d love to see them get as creative as they were in their heyday, but there are still some classics.
KNITWEAR
J. Press Shaggy Dog Sweater - The Shaggy Dog is something every guy should have in his fall wardrobe.
Naadam Original Cashmere Sweater - Say what you will, but for the price point, Naadam makes good staple pieces. I wear my blue crew probably weekly.
Ghiaia Cotton Crewneck
Ghiaia Sea Cotton-Cashmere Raglan - For those with a little more cash in their pocket, this is where you should turn.
Leret Leret No. 39 Cardigan: For those with even more cash in their pocket, these sweaters are amazing. Not everyday wear, but fun pieces to mess around with, perfect for fall.
Finisterre Barents Sweater
Finisterre Coho Sweatshirt - This brand rocks.Flint and Tinder Headlands Rollneck - Flint and Tinder, from the Huckberry team, is really good for staple menswear.
OUTERWEAR
Nudie Jeans Barney Worker Jacket - I get asked about this chore jacket a thousand times over. I’ve always kept it on the low, but here you are.
Amundsen Breguet Jacket - These jackets are so technical and so good. Very different from anything being made in the US from a design standpoint.
Casatlantic Windbreaker - You don’t own a windbreaker, and you should.
Studio Clint Loden Wool Vest - Studio Clint is a brand-new label my friend in Germany put me onto. Watch these lads.
Finisterre Lapwing Insulated Jacket
Finisterre Firecrest Jacket - Finisterre again. These jackets are amazing. Pick one and buy it.Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker - Flint and Tinder again.
TAILORING
TROUSER’S
Vito’s High n’ Wide Pant - I’ve started mixing in a slightly looser fit on some occasions and have enjoyed it. The High n’ Wides are a must if you can get ’em.
Polo Ralph Lauren Herringbone Field Cargo - It’s not a fall list without a little Ralph.
FOOTWEAR, BAGS & ACCESSORIES
The Outpost Commuter Bag - These bags are moving. I’ve been so stoked on mine, and the waxed canvas is aging like a fine wine.
Blundstone Rocky Road Chelsea Boot - A classic they continue to roll out, and another addition I love. I want this one in grey.
Birkenstock Boston Suede - Wool socks and Birks are a fall staple.
Sid Mashburn Navy Bullseye Club Tie
Sid Mashburn Forest Racket Club Tie - Some ties I dig, especially the WM Brown bullseye. Beyond supporting Matt, I think the logo looks amazing on the navy. I lost mine a while back and need to grab another.-
Ballard New York Stirrup Belt - Another young company. The nod to horse stirrups on this silver buckle is tremendous.
The entire Outpost Fall Collection is live on Outpost for your viewing pleasure. Let us know what you’re snagging in the comments!
