The team at Outpost is happy to introduce another weekly column for your fancy. Ashton our resident date-night expert, will be reporting on New York’s hottest spots to spark a conversation or, in her words, something a bit more.
From high-end martini joints to unassuming dive bars, here are the best places to take that hot date of yours—through her eyes.
One4one
As winter arrives on the island of Manhattan, we seek places to host good company and shelter from the cold outside. Each year, Mother Nature repeats herself - cold air pledges loyalty to November, and my cold hands to an amber ale.
When we step outside this time of year, an overly friendly wind often travels into our coats and around our sides to announce the season’s on-time arrival. Among my ancestors, there are two known remedies to fight off cold winter air: get inside and get a drink. The two paired together create the perfect antidote.
One4one, the freshly opened sports lounge in the Lower East Side, offers the place to grab your chilly partner and test these cold-ridden remedies. Any sports bar loyalist can see One4one is not about the many games broadcasted on its walls; it’s about the commitment to enjoying those games with another. It’s a place to warm each other with camaraderie or with playful flattery.
All of One4one’s glory lives behind a very inconspicuous, unmarked black door, on Chrystie street. Once you open the door, a dark hallway illuminated by green lights leads you up a staircase to its first bar. You step into what feels like a suave house party, full of people you now have the pleasure of meeting. The movie theater sized screen on the back wall captivates you almost as much as your date does.
The familiar cheers of stadium fans, referee whistles, and Al Michaels’ announcements playing softly in the background bring a well-known comfort. After a few warming remedies, you may mistakenly think you’re in your friend’s living room on a Thursday night during football season.
If you travel up to the second floor you will find a pool table, horseshoe seating, and a masterfully crafted main bar. As you navigate from room to room because one game ends or a commercial starts, you’re met with star athletes on the walls and kick-back inspired seating. A wise tale of advice - you may look past your date’s eyes to catch the play but bring them back to home base to avoid any dismay.
Homebound, you step out of the same black door you entered before the night began and brace for the cold that awaits. The door slamming behind you, cutting the evening’s sounds, feels like an invitation to gaze at the bright moon, which appears to have left a big, wet kiss on the dark sky. It may present the right moment to mirror the same on your date’s cheek.
