Your dad texted and it’s time to gather for uninterrupted moments with all of your family and friends, not just the preferred ones. Frankly, it’s not uncommon for tension to be sprinkled over our holiday feasts or for a relative to bring their own side of beef to the dinner table. Opinions among family members may differ so wildly you request to see a family tree. But I promise you, there is a solution to this holiday static that will undeniably bind you all together - laughter!
Whether you’re with those who watched you grow up, or a new person in your life - laughter is the best way to slow time and embrace how much we enjoy each other. When we let out a chuckle or a breathless belly-laugh, we lower our guards and make space to get closer.
On the eighth day of the earth’s creation, God gifted man laughter. And, I can testify that he still hands it out every Monday night at the NoStatic Comedy show around 7:30PM. The NoStatic comedy show takes place at the Overlook bar, which has a back room to host the most gifted comedians and musicians in New York City. This is not the standard New York City comedy show or jazz performance that we’ve all grown familiar with. NoStatic’s soul-jazz orchestra of heavily awarded musicians delivers smooth melodies in accompaniment to comedic performances.
After the orchestra serenades the audience for a while, Max Kryillios, creator of NoStatic Comedy, greets everyone with his infectious excitement for both comedy and music. The diabolically funny host then takes the stage to introduce the evening’s comedians. The show’s comedy finds a way to touch everyone in the room - including myself. My face met my palms more times than I can count as I attempted to wrangle my unrelenting laughter.
The orchestra freestyles a live soundtrack to each comedian’s set. The seamless marriage of the comedians’ delivery and the orchestra’s on queue sounds is true artistry. They say laughter is the best medicine - add NoStatic’s soul-jazz orchestra and good company and you’ll forget you were ever sick.
After the show closes, some show-goers linger at the bar, including the comedians. However, you will likely hurry home to attempt to retell the jokes to your roommate in your living room, but the delivery will be impossible to replicate - trust me, I tried.
