Table for Two: L'Apero

The French have a reputation for salted butter, kissing, Bordeauxs, and discreet love affairs…I tried a few last week.

L’Apero by L’Appartement 4F, is a newly opened, natural wine bar by a very well known Brooklyn born bakery. A bakery that made us New Yorkers fall in love with its croissants and viral mini croissant cereal.

It opened its kitchen to begin serving farm fresh, seasonal dishes Wednesday through Saturday (evenings). They host two seatings, 6pm and 8:30pm, in the upstairs of their Brooklyn Heights location. It’s a prix fixe four course menu - each plate meant to be shared by two.

First, a baguette with house made french butter, then an endive wedge salad with maple syrup dressing and blue cheese. Third course is a Top Sirloin steak with poivre sauce, joined by sauteed, garlicky swiss chard and pommes purées. The dinner comes with two wine pairings, both French of course. Lastly, the dessert presents a love affair in itself - a sweet, beautiful scoop of vanilla ice cream courted by a rich, chocolate chip tahini cookie.

The tilted photo frames, antique furniture, low lighting, and lingering smell of the mornings’ baking, slip you and your date into a Parisian dream. After dinner, you may fancy a stroll together and expect to look up and see the twinkling Eiffel Tower. Buzzing from wine imported from regions I can’t recall, I left full and happy just like their bakery every Saturday morning.
